Step 1: Pick your test

Which test wins you the most CRS points?

We calculate the exact CRS uplift each test delivers for a sample profile, so you train for the one that matters most, not just the one you've heard of.

Before you choose

What is CLB and why does it matter?

Every IRCC-recognised language test produces its own raw score. IRCC then converts that raw score into a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) level, a single number from 1 to 12 that works across all tests. That conversion is what lets IRCC compare an IELTS score against a CELPIP score on equal terms.

1

You sit a language test

IELTS gives you a band score (e.g. 7.5). CELPIP gives you a level (e.g. 9). Each test has its own scale.

2

Your score is converted to CLB

IRCC maps each raw score to a CLB level per skill. Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking are scored independently. An IELTS 7.5 in Listening ≈ CLB 8.

3

CLB determines your CRS points

Higher CLB = more CRS points. Going from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four skills can add 50+ points to your CRS score, often enough to clear the cutoff.

Common CLB targets for Express Entry

CLB 7Minimum for FSWBaseline CRS points
CLB 9Strong: unlocks skill-transfer bonus+52 to 106 CRS points vs CLB 7
CLB 10+Expert: maximum language pointsMax CRS language score

Bottom line: the test itself doesn't matter to IRCC. Your CLB level does. The comparison below shows which test gives you the highest CLB for the least effort, for a sample profile.

French unlocks a CRS bonus most candidates miss

Reach NCLC 7+ in French (via TEF Canada or TCF Canada) and IRCC adds +25 CRS points on top of your English score. Combine with CLB 5+ in English and the bonus jumps to +50. French test prep is coming to the Learning Hub. Focus on English first, then revisit.

Compare your options

Each card shows the test format, where to book, and how many CRS points you'd gain at three target CLB levels.
